Classification of Input Devices

Input devices are hardware components that allow you to enter data and instructions into a computer. They act as a bridge, converting physical actions (like typing, clicking, or speaking) into signals that the computer’s CPU can understand and process.

Common Input Devices
  • Keyboard: The primary device for entering text, numbers, and commands by pressing keys.
  • Mouse: A pointing device used to move a cursor on the screen and select items by clicking.
  • Scanner: Converts physical documents or photos into digital images for the computer.
  • Microphone: Captures audio input for recording, voice commands, or online communication.
  • Webcam: Captures real-time video or still images.
  • Joystick: Primarily used for gaming to control movement and actions.

Classification of Output Devices

Output devices are hardware components that receive processed data from a computer and convert it into a human-perceptible form, such as sound, visuals, or physical printouts.

Key Output Devices
  • Monitor (VDU): The primary visual output device that displays text, images, and videos on a screen.
  • Printer: Creates a physical “hard copy” of digital documents or images on paper. Common types include laser and inkjet printers.
  • Speakers and Headphones: Convert digital signals into sound for audio output like music or voice.
  • Projector: Displays computer-generated visuals onto a large surface or wall for presentations.
  • Plotter: A specialized device used for printing high-quality vector graphics, such as architectural maps or engineering designs.
